Another dimension

Finally had time to play with my new toy. Element 3D from VideoCopilot is an After Effects plug-in that let you edit, build and manipulate 3D objects in real time. I haven’t even scratched the surface yet, but I’m liking what I see.

Since I’m not a 3D modeller, this is a nice way to fool the world into thinking that I am.

This model is built with two masks. These masks are textured, extruded and positioned in 3D space. A camera is added to the scene to move around the object. The object itself can also be moved and manipulated, however for this early test, I thought I’d keep things simple. I changed the depth of field setting in the camera to different depths to give the scene a more dynamic look, zooming in close to details and then pulling the camera out to a safe distance.

Depth of Field

Using the built in lights with extra lights which move about as the camera pans out created some nice results.

Fly through sequence

I’m a bit nervous about the amount of times Element 3D crashed After Effect during the build of this little test animation. I’m sure it’s more to do with me than the program, so I need to find out the cause of this before I can really start using it in larger project. the last thing you need is a corrupt file that won’t render and an unsympathetic and angry client.

Adding light

That said, I think this plug-in is incredible and Im pretty sure will feature in future work. The community using this seem to be creating some fancy stuff too.
